In the works of Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes and his friend Dr. Watson lived in an apartment at Baker Street, 221b (221b, Baker Street) in the period from 1881 to 1904. While writing these works, there was no such address in London. Subsequently, with the extension of Baker Street to the north (where, at the end of the XIX century, there was a street called Upper Baker Street), this number was among rooms from 215 to 229, and was awarded to the building of the construction society Abbey National. For this reason, for many years, Abbey National has been compelled to hold a special secretary for the processing of letters and other correspondence, which is constantly coming to Baker Street, 221b, to Sherlock Holmes. When creating a museum, the company "221b Baker Street" was specially registered to be able to legally hang on "Sherlock Holmes House", the real number of which 239, the corresponding plaque. But then the house got the official postal address 221b, Baker Street, London, NW1 6XE, and the correspondence began to come directly to the museum.

Sherlock Holmes

Sherlock Holmes is a fictional character created by Arthur Conan Doyle in 1887. He is an English consulting detective living in London at 221b Baker Street.
At first Arthur Conan Doyle named the detective as Sherrinford Holmes (not Sherringford as he wrongly mentioned in his auto-biography Memories and Adventures 40 years later) and the biographer Ormond Sacker (see manuscript in A Study in Scarlet). But he changed his mind and renamed them as Sherlock Holmes and John H. Watson.

Arthur Conan Doyle Quotes

"I am the most incurably lazy devil that ever stood in shoe leather.”

“I cannot live without brainwork. What else is there to live for? Stand at the window here. Was ever such a dreary, dismal, unprofitable world? See how the yellow fog swirls down the street and drifts across the duncoloured houses. What could be more hopelessly prosaic and material?”

In 1886, newly married and still struggling to make it as an author, Doyle started writing the mystery novel A Tangled Skein. Two years later, the novel was renamed A Study in Scarlet and published in Beeton's Christmas AnnualA Study in Scarlet, which first introduced the wildly popular characters Detective Sherlock Holmes and his assistant, Watson, finally earned Doyle the recognition he had so desired. It was the first of 60 stories that Doyle would pen about Sherlock Holmes over the course of his writing career. Also, in 1887, Doyle submitted two letters about his conversion to Spiritualism to a weekly periodical called Light.
